New England Village utilizes a highly individualized, person-centered approach to Day Habilitation and offers a comprehensive program to best meet the needs of all individuals served.
Day Habilitation is a Medicaid-funded service program for adults 22 years of age or older with a diagnosed developmental disability. The program is designed to improve the functional abilities of the participants. To that end, each person has a customized, person-centered service plan based on individual learning ability, therapeutic needs, and personal interests.
The Day Habilitation Service Plan establishes measurable goals and objectives, and an integrated program of activities is developed to achieve the stated goals. Our Day Habilitation program provides a practical approach to skill-based programming, with an emphasis on developmental skills, gross and fine motor skills, communication skills, life skills, wellness, and meaningful community participation.
Day Habilitation Activities
Day Habilitation is held at our location in Kingston, the Efron Center for Enrichment. The building was designed specifically to benefit individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering a layout that maximizes learning and independence. Located in a beautifully landscaped setting, bright and spacious group rooms, specialty areas including sensory and fitness rooms, outdoor patios, and walking areas offer individuals opportunities to learn, practice, and refine skills in a safe environment. The program operates Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The programs we offer include:
Wellness and Fitness
Fitness and exercise, creative movement, and activities that engage all the senses are components of daily programming. Individuals may focus on improving and maintaining endurance, balance, range of motion, strength, and flexibility using various creative mediums.
Our sensory room provides experiences in the areas of relaxation, regulation, and self-care. Participants may use this room to engage their visual, aural, tactile, olfactory, and kinesthetic senses to explore and understand the world around them.
Art and Music
Expression through art and music is an important creative outlet for most people. Art and music offer another way to communicate, tell a story, and showcase strengths. The creative arts focus on ability, and individuals have the opportunity to explore self-expression through a variety of mediums and experiences.
Technology
Computer access is designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of abilities. Modifications and adaptations are made to PCs and iPads to help increase skills in the areas of communication and daily living activities. Switches, touch screens, and cutting-edge software are just some of the tools used to increase access and engagement.
Aquatics
Day program participants have access to a pool and full-service locker rooms at the Sollar Wellness Center, which is located on the grounds of our Pembroke location. A certified aqua fitness instructor and trained lifeguard ensure safety for all who use the pool.
